How to Become an Airline Pilot in Utah

Becoming an airline pilot takes a clear set of steps, and each one builds on the one before it. Many career-track pilots follow this order, and you can start at step one with us. We train students from Ogden, Layton, Bountiful, and Salt Lake City.

It all starts with your Private Pilot certificate, and you can take that first step in Ogden.

Take a Discovery Flight

You sit in the pilot seat, fly the airplane with an instructor beside you, and see what a real lesson feels like. It is a low-commitment way to find out if flying is for you before you sign up for a full course.

Earn a Private Pilot Certificate

This is the foundation of every pilot career. You learn aircraft control, navigation, radio calls, and safety, and you earn the right to fly for personal use and carry passengers. It does not let you fly for pay, which is why the next steps matter.

Add an Instrument Rating

An instrument rating teaches you to fly by reference to your instruments in clouds and low visibility. Airline flying depends on it, and it makes you a more precise pilot in any airplane.

Earn a Commercial Pilot Certificate

The commercial certificate lets you fly for compensation in certain operations. You train to a higher standard of precision and learn how professional pilots manage complex airplanes.

Add a Multi-Engine Rating

Airlines fly airplanes with more than one engine, so a multi-engine rating is a core part of the path. At Blitz you earn it in a Beechcraft Baron, a high-performance twin that gives you a faster, more complex airplane to show on your resume.

Become a Certified Flight Instructor

With a CFI certificate you can teach other pilots to fly, and you can add a CFII to teach instrument flying. Instructing is how many pilots start building the flight time airlines ask for, and it sharpens your own skills every day.

Build Flight Hours

Airlines look for experienced pilots, and the standard airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate commonly needs 1,500 hours of total time along with other FAA requirements. Some qualifying military pilots and graduates of FAA-approved degree programs can qualify with fewer hours. Many pilots build time as flight instructors. It is a common route and never a guaranteed job.

Apply to the Airlines

FAA minimums are only minimums, and airlines set their own hiring standards on top of them, including interviews, background checks, and the right medical certificate. Many pilots start as a first officer at a regional airline. No school can promise you a seat, so we focus on what we control: training you well.

Questions About the Airline Pilot Career Path

Many career-track pilots earn a private pilot certificate, an instrument rating, a commercial pilot certificate, and a multi-engine rating. Most then become flight instructors to build hours and work toward the ATP certificate that airlines require. Blitz trains the first six steps.
The standard ATP certificate commonly needs 1,500 hours of total time, plus other FAA requirements. Some qualifying military pilots and graduates of FAA-approved degree programs can qualify with fewer hours. Airlines also set their own hiring standards, so check the airlines you want to fly for.
Some airlines prefer a degree and others do not, and the rules differ by airline. Check the hiring pages of the airlines you want to join, and plan your training around what they ask for.
Airline flying generally needs a first-class medical certificate, and many pilots get one early to know where they stand before they invest in training. Questions about your eligibility belong with an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).
No. Instructing is a common way to build time, and it is not the only one. Hiring depends on school needs and openings, so a CFI job is never automatic.
Yes. Blitz offers self-paced Part 61 training around your schedule, and accelerated courses for students who want to finish faster. Call us or book a discovery flight and we will help you plan around your work.
Financing options may be available to qualified applicants through our partners, Stratus Financial and Flight Training Finance. Contact us and we will walk you through the options for each step.
